Can European Med School graduates apply for Residency in U.S. or Postgraduate Programs in different countries?

A space to discuss possible residency pathways after studying in Europe, including the USA, UK, EU countries, Canada, and home-country licensing options.

The end goal for me is a US residency, but I keep wondering, can a European med grad actually MATCH into US residency? And what about other options, UK, EU countries, Canada, going home? I want to understand all the postgraduate pathways open to a European graduate BEFORE I commit, so I’m not trapped with a degree that limits me. Lay out the realistic options please.

Yes, European med grads can and do match into US residency, but you go through the same IMG pathway as any international grad, and it requires deliberate planning. For the US: you need your school to be ECFMG-eligible (see the recognition thread!), you must pass the USMLE Steps (Step 1 and especially Step 2 CK now), ideally get US clinical experience and US letters of recommendation, and then apply through the Match as an IMG. It’s absolutely doable, established European schools send grads to US residencies every year, but it’s competitive and you must prepare from early on, not as an afterthought. For the UK, it’s the GMC route (often PLAB plus English requirements). Within the EU, an EU-recognized degree lets you pursue postgraduate training across EU countries relatively smoothly. Canada is notoriously hard for IMGs, fewer spots, tough process, be realistic. And home-country licensing varies, some require extra screening exams. The key, decide your target early and build toward THAT system’s requirements throughout medical school.

nailed it. For US-bound students the message is, your European degree is the START, the USMLE scores and US clinical experience are what actually win the match. Plan for the USMLE from your preclinical years. Don’t coast and panic later.
