When I was researching Plovdiv, I came across the Times article. my first reaction was concern but after digging into it more I realised the issue was about a marketing award not about academic accreditation. the genuine accreditations that matter for practicing medicine in Europe are completely separate and Plovdiv holds those. The EBA thing was a reputational own goal not an academic failure.
the paid awards point is important context. the EBA operates by inviting institutions to nominate themselves and charging fees for the ceremony and award materials. dozens of universities across Eastern Europe received similar awards during the same period. Plovdiv was not uniquely gullible, it was caught in a wider pattern that the Times chose to report on specifically.
as someone who studied in Bulgaria i think the honest answer is that Plovdiv’s reputation among people who actually know the medical education landscape was not significantly damaged by this. the people who matter, residency coordinators, medical councils, licensing bodies, do not use EBA awards as an evaluation criterion. they look at EU recognition and degree standards.
