RCSI tuition fees for international students and what financial support is available?

RCSI is a private not-for-profit institution with significantly higher fees than Irish public universities. This thread breaks down the actual cost per year for international students, what scholarships exist, and whether US federal student loans or other loan programs are accessible.

hey everyone, I am seriously considering RCSI for medicine and the academics and clinical reputation all sound great but I am really struggling to get a straight answer on the money side of things. The website gives you a fee figure but it does not tell you the full picture. I am from the US and I want to know what the actual yearly cost is including living expenses, whether US federal loans work at RCSI, and if there are any scholarships worth applying for that are not just symbolic amounts. Would really appreciate anyone who has been through this to share what they actually paid and how they funded it.

mingzhao5577 okay so I am a current third year American student at RCSI so I can give you the breakdown as honestly as I can. Tuition is somewhere around 57,000 to 60,000 euros per year depending on the year of the program. The first two years are the preclinical years and the fee is slightly lower, then it goes up a bit in clinical years. That is just tuition, not living costs.

For living in Dublin you are realistically looking at another 12,000 to 16,000 euros a year minimum if you are careful. Rent is brutal in Dublin right now. Student accommodation through RCSI is limited and competitive so do not count on getting it. Most people end up in shared private rentals which can run 800 to 1000 euros a month per person in a house share, sometimes more depending on the area.

So total all in per year you are probably looking at 70,000 to 75,000 euros in a realistic budget. That is not a number to take lightly.

those numbers are honestly terrifying but thank you for being upfront about it. Can I ask about the US federal loan question specifically because that is the part I am most confused about. I know some foreign med schools are approved for US federal loans through the Title IV program but I have no idea if RCSI qualifies. Does anyone actually know the answer to this?

yes RCSI is approved for US federal student loans, it is listed as an eligible foreign institution for Title IV federal aid which means American students can access Direct Unsubsidized Loans and Graduate PLUS Loans through the standard FAFSA process. This is a big deal and honestly one of the reasons RCSI attracts so many American students compared to other European med schools that are not on the approved list.

The loan limits are the same as they would be for a US program. Graduate PLUS covers up to the cost of attendance so in theory you can borrow enough to cover tuition and living costs, though you are obviously taking on a huge amount of debt to do it. I would strongly suggest talking to a financial aid counselor who has experience with foreign medical schools before committing to this path.
