XUSOM is accredited by ACCM through 2028 and recognized by NYSED, what does that mean for your residency options in different US states?

State-level recognition affects where you can do rotations and eventually get licensed. This thread breaks down exactly what XUSOM’s accreditations mean for clinical placement in New York, other states, and Canada.

ok so I have been trying to figure this out for weeks and honestly the confusion is real. ACCM accreditation basically means XUSOM meets a set international standard for offshore med schools and the 2028 date just means they are actively evaluated and not expired. the NYSED recognition is the bigger deal imo because New York has one of the strictest medical licensing boards in the country. if they recognize your school, you can actually sit for licensing exams and apply for rotations in NY hospitals. other states look at NY recognition as like a quality signal, so it does help outside NY too even if it is not automatic everywhere

yeah this. i went through the rotation matching process last semester and NYSED recognition literally opened the door for me at a couple of the New York affiliated hospitals. the coordinators asked about it upfront and when i told them XUSOM is NYSED recognized they did not give me a hard time. but just to add, every hospital still has their own credentialing process so even with accreditation you gotta make sure your transcripts, USMLE step scores, and dean’s letter are all in order before you even apply. the accreditation just clears the first gate, it does not do everything for you

Sorry if this is a basic question but does NYSED recognition mean you can do rotations in any NY hospital or just specific ones? I am trying to figure out if i would be stuck with only a handful of sites or if it opens a decent number of options. also does this matter at all for states like Texas or California or are those completely separate processes

not a basic question at all, i had the same one when i was pre-med. so NYSED recognition means XUSOM is on the list of schools that NY considers acceptable for licensing purposes. that helps when NY hospitals are vetting students for clinical rotations because those hospitals have to follow state rules. it does not mean every single NY hospital will automatically take you, some of them are extremely competitive, but it removes the biggest barrier which is the school not being on the approved list. for Texas and California, those states have their own evaluation process and they mainly look at USMLE scores and whether the school meets WHO or AVICENNA directory criteria. NYSED recognition is not the deciding factor there but it does not hurt either
